Jazz Bands of the 1926 General Strike

The museum holds several interesting items linked to the 1926 General Strike, a national industrial strike which saw thousands of miners across South Wales striking for better working hours and pay.

This bolero jacket and trousers was worn by David Charles Huntley, a member of the Victoria Street Band, Miskin, Mountain Ash.

Jazz bands were integral for boosting morale by parading the streets of the Cynon Valley, performing, playing instruments such as drums and kazoos, and raising funds for the struggling mining families.

During 1926 the number of jazz bands across the Cynon Valley increased, in the Aberdare valley alone there were 60 jazz bands!
