The Albion Colliery Disaster

And Its Aftermath

By Alun Caffery

At mid afternoon 23rd June 1894 a terrible explosion rent the air in Cilfynydd. The ground shook and smoke and dust rose above the pit. Almost 300 men and boys lost their lives. This talk tells the story of that day and of life in the village.
Alun Caffery was born and brought up in Cilfynydd. He was the Headteacher of the local Primary School. He has enjoyed history and this story is very personal as his relatives worked at the Albion Colliery.
