Exhibition at Home
Born in Aberdare and with an M.A in fine art, Lee Shott has exhibited throughout Wales and is now having a solo online exhibition via the Cynon Valley Museum digital gallery space ‘Exhibition at Home’ and Instagram page. The exhibition consists of figurative and landscape paintings with expressive and immediate brush work which gives the work energy and life: the tactile and bold applications of paint make for diverse imagery that leads to an exciting exhibition.
We hope you enjoy the exhibition.
Combining observations with diverse approaches to painting; Lee subjectively captures the contemporary culture of communities throughout South Wales. The work focuses on human interactions and the idiosyncrasies based on his participation in day-to-day life; from observing people and his surroundings whether by going on day and night-time walks or commuting by public transport. Lee is intrigued by the human psyche, from viewing passers-by and passengers, capturing voyeuristic perspectives with implications of surveillance, becoming a surveyor of his surroundings and depicting isolated portraits and landscapes.
The paintings have bold and visceral brush work to capture the source material, becoming subjective in the process which generates melancholic imagery with pathos; reacting quickly, often completing a painting in one sitting.
In this body of work Lee expresses his prolonged fascination with paint and the unique possible outcomes. The works includes portraits with blurred and fragmented features along with figurative images of workers and young people. His landscape paintings merge man made machinery with green natural valleys of south Wales. Each painting presents a precise yet ambiguous moment, obliterating aspects and the identity of images which create new avenues of thought. He is looking at the past and future through images of families and school pupils, creating a thought provoking and personal journey in which he has translated his words and feelings into images of modern day life.
